The reason why many of The Beatles mono mixes are different to the stereo is because not enough care went into the stereo mixes. The same is true for Motown. Mono ruled radio back in the sixties so you are listening to the hit mixes.

From the top of my head, and very quickly, I remember that “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” has some reverb added to the voice and its mix is a bit different. Same for “The Next Step Is Love”.

I’m not sure, but I think “Kentucky Rain” is also different since it wasn’t even released in stereo until 1985 or so.

As for the post ’71 tracks, you won’t find much difference since they are fold downs, that is: the stereo version collapsed to mono, with the only difference being the balance of channels and/or some compression added and/or some tweaking to its EQ. “Burning Love”, for instance, sounds a bit different, with pronounced bass, for that reason. I’m under the impression that this procedure is also true for some 60’s tracks that were released in stereo on LPs.

ust had a chance to listen to Disc 5 of the box. These songs struck me as sounding very nice:

– Seperate Ways
– Raised On Rock (clearer drums and mix to my ears then on some other releases of the Master of this song)
– For Ol’ Times Sake
– Promised Land
– T-R-O-U-B-L-E

“Edge Of Reality”, “Puppet On A String”, “Blue River” are standouts!

An Elvis ad-lib is lower in the single MONO mix of “The Wonder of You.”

There’s some kick-ass xylo/vibra-phone on “Heart of Rome” hardly evident on either of the stereo mixes.

‘ve listened to a lot of tracks on discs 3, 4, and 5 so far. Some of the singles sound a lot better in mono, like There Goes My Everything and Raised on Rock, and a few songs sound almost completely different, such as Heart of Rome and Edge of Reality.

So far all of the tracks taken from the master tapes sound superb, but a handful of them taken from the acetates are not mastered too well, such as Bosom of Abraham and An American Trilogy; but overall, the acetate songs sound quite good.

Mama Liked The Roses I’m Yours Long Lonely Highway In many ways mono is about compression, punchiness, balance differences and eq compared to the stereo mixes.
